Deloitte, one of the nation’s largest professional service network recently conducted research which has showed that “mission-driven companies have 30% higher levels of innovation and 40% higher levels of retention.”
According to Deloitte’s 2015 Global Human Capital Trends report, “corporate culture is no longer just ‘nice to have.’” Why aren’t companies always benefitting from a strong corporate culture? The answer to this question is the same answer for so many others in our society. Not all companies are aware of the fact that their employees are not emotionally engaged. Ever notice that when a project comes along and it’s within our wheelhouse or it revolves around something we care about, we thrive on it? It’s because we are emotionally attached to it. There is some part of us that connects with what we’re doing on a molecular level, thus, we can’t help but be more driven to succeed.
So how can our companies reach that point of employee engagement and emotional connection to what we do for a living, and our business’ culture? Culture change happens through the heart. In order to change to occur, people need to feel it. They need to be a part of it. They need to feel that they have a higher purpose and that they should have and constantly be setting goals for themselves, as well as for the company.
Being that 87% of all business leaders cited “organizational culture and employee engagement” as one of their top challenges during 2015, we can attest to the fact that this is still an issue in the workplace. Corporate culture isn’t created with the snap of your fingers. Nor does it change over night. It is something that must constantly be examined and measured, in order to make sure we are getting the most work out of the people we have, but instead, getting the best and most genuine work out of our employees. It all comes down to emotional investment, and making sure that our employees are in it to win it.
